Ron Newby MBE, founder and chief executive of international Christian children’s charity Global Care, died, aged 64, on October 16 in Nuneaton, following a short illness. He leaves two daughters, four grandchildren, and numerous adopted children worldwide.

John White, Ron’s deputy and now Global Care’s acting chief executive officer, said: ‘Ron’s passing is felt so keenly by the UK and overseas staff, the children, the volunteers and the management of Global Care. Without question his lasting legacy will be the life changing projects, the relationships and genuine compassion which has touched so many. We share his vision to touch ever more vulnerable lives through the continuation of his work’.

Ron was born and grew up in Runcorn as one of eight brothers and sisters and moved to the Midlands to study and work. He practised a wide range of social work in Britain for over 25 years, including senior executive posts within local government social services and the voluntary sector. He founded Global Care, following a visit to war-torn Uganda in 1983, as a small child-sponsorship scheme run from the end of the kitchen table at his Coventry home. Today, Global Care supports street children, slum children, refugee children, child labourers, orphans and abandoned children in 43 projects in 27 countries on four continents.
