Banner of Truth’s Humphrey Mildred dies

On Sunday 31 December, Humphrey Mildred was promoted to glory, aged 89. He leaves behind his wife Ruth, and their four children: Felicity, James, Ben and Pippa.

Born in London in 1934, Humphrey was the third child to Frank, a Baptist Minister, and Ivy Mildred. Evacuated for a brief spell, Humphrey spent most of the war in London.

After the war, for his National Service, Mildred joined the Navy – a bold choice for someone who could not swim! It was there that he was converted after seeing the transformation in a close friend who had been saved.

In 1959, Humphrey joined the Banner of Truth Trust. In 1973, the Banner moved to Edinburgh, and Humphrey also moved north and joined Bellevue Baptist Church. In time he was appointed Minister. It was at Bellevue that he met Ruth and they were married in 1987.

Colleagues at the Banner remember the high standards of production he always insisted on. His ministry was characterised by hopefulness and faithfulness. Humphrey had a real gift for public prayer and he loved to pray God’s promises. He never lost his fervent hope that God would arise and revive His work in the midst of the years! Under his faithful ministry, souls were saved and saints built up.

Humphrey was a loving husband and father; kind, exceedingly generous, with a great sense of humour. He leaves an irreplaceable gap in the lives of his family. We give God thanks for a life well lived and that Humphrey is now at peace and rest, waiting for the day to dawn when the earth really will be filled with the knowledge of God’s glory, as the waters cover the sea.
