Evangelical Christian Sir Paul Marshall has bought weekly political magazine The Spectator for £100 million.
Marshall, a hedge fund tycoon and major investor in GB News, acquired the right-leaning title against stiff competition. He is also a prospective buyer of the Telegraph newspaper group, which is on the market after the government refused to allow a bid from an Abu-Dhabi backed consortium.
Worth an estimated £875 million, last year, according to the Sunday Times Giving List, he gave over £5.5million a month to charities. He also sits on the board of Holy Trinity Brompton’s (HTB’s) Church Revitalisation Trust.
Marshall makes no secret of his motivation. 'The root is my faith,' he said in a 2012 interview with the Evening Standard. 'I am a committed Church of England Christian, I believe we are all made in God’s image, that we all have gifts and that education is the key to realising our potential.'
In a lecture given in 2019 he said that if you believe your success is due to your own hard work or virtue, you may feel a sense of personal entitlement to any wealth you accumulate. But if you feel instead that your wealth and status are gifts from God, it makes for a kind of personal modesty - an understanding that, by the grace of God, you have been called to do special work for Him.
