Thrive in the 9 'til 5

GOD @ WORK Video

By Mark Greene with David Prior

London Bible College

40 minutes. £12.50 (plus £1.50 p&p)

We have not been good at relating our Christianity to the workplace. Many Christians have never heard teaching from Scripture on God's attitude to work and feel the church is uninterested in their nine 'til five struggles. This very well-made video looks at the issue.

It has two sections each lasting 20 minutes. The first introduces 'workplace theology' and the second explores 'workplace ministry and evangelism'. The front man is Mark Greene, a friendly communicator with lots of hand movement, and the straight man/expert is David Prior (of the Centre for Marketplace Theology) who chips in with a few sage comments.

There are many positives to record. It covers basic Bible teaching, and brings helpful real-life illustrations from Mark Greene's time in advertising. It encourages an uncomplicated emphasis on practising the presence of God at work, and caring for colleagues. It has done its homework in setting a tone and style which is just right for a younger generation of workers.

There are some negatives. It is rather middle-class and theologically loose at times. The visual effects going on behind Mark Greene's talking are wonderful, but so fascinating they can make you forget what is being said. But this video is worth getting. It will stir discussion in home groups and church and may even get us praying for each other at work.
