By John Bunyan

Banner of Truth Trust. 129 pages. £2.25

This short book (an addition to the Puritan Paperback Series) is a treatise on the knowledge of Christ's love, as we find it in Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3.18-19.

Bunyan is acutely aware that he is dealing with the mysterious and limitless theme of redeeming love, but is not content to suggest that his subject is utterly beyond our grasp. Instead, he shows us the glory of the love of Christ (headed 'Desiring the Inexpressible'), and then helps us to take hold of the love of Christ for ourselves ('Desiring the Incomparable' and 'Obtaining the Unsurpassable'). A final section underlines the practical importance of the apostle's prayer.

This is a wonderful book, written with an ardent concern that believers really take hold of the great heart of the gospel, Jesus' love for his people. Bunyan urges us to a deeper devotion to our Saviour, and gently teaches us how to come to that. It is a very accessible introduction to Bunyan, and an excellent price will hopefully mean that it reaches the wide readership which will certainly benefit from it.
