First published in 1874, the book is designed to give an overview of the book of Job; looking at its component parts in order to help the reader in understanding the whole. Little, it seems, has changed in over 100 years, because the motivation behind this book is to overcome the 'fragmentary . . . current methods of dealing with the Bible'.
Green, who taught at Princeton for nearly 50 years, seeks to fulfil his aim by first giving a brief analysis of the book and then focusing on the main protagonists. Job, Satan, the three friends, Elihu and the Lord all receive careful consideration. As we are introduced to one actor in the drama after another, the main ideas of the book are brought before us. The book is well presented and only very rarely shows its age in language that might mystify. The flow of thought is clear and practical application is not ignored. Conscious of some of the questions he is raising in the course of his overview, the author adds two appendices: 'The place of Job in the scheme of Holy Scripture' and 'The doctrine of mortality in the Old Testament'.
