Many churches find it hard to teach the basics of what the Lord's Supper is about without getting tangled up in its controversial history. Here is an excellent resource which will give many congregations firm and biblical direction for the proper practice of their Communion services.
The video has five sessions, each 0-15 minutes long, in which Wallace Benn teaches from the Bible about different aspects of the Lord's Supper. This material is first rate, and although orientated to the Church of England, could certainly be used by other congregations. Accompanying the video is a well-produced workbook. This gives some suggestions on how the course can be used alongside the Bible study material designed to explore the teaching given in the video.
There is a good balance of flexibility and structure therefore in the material that is provided. Many Anglicans will consider using the course to prepare people for confirmation. The workbook includes a single summary session which draws on material from the full course. This could be useful in some situations, but it is a pity that there is no similar video compilation of Wallace Benn's teaching to accompany this. The workbook also has an appendix where the background to the Communion services found in the new Church of England service book Common Worship is described.
All in all this is a valuable resource which fills a real need and can be wholeheartedly commended. Through its use, many churches and individuals will find their practice of the Lord's Supper better conformed to a Scriptural understanding of Jesus's ordinance.
