TACHO'S STORY
By Kitty Pride
Paternoster. 336 pages. £5.99
ISBN 1 85078 402 7

The writer has spent 40 years living with the Chatino Indians in Mexico with Wycliffe Bible Translators.

She draws on the experiences of various people to give us this 'true to life' picture of people in that area, with their traditional life, customs, family and community relationships. It reveals a society where whole families of the poor become helplessly and literally enslaved through debt, and power and control remain with the rich. Education offers some hope if the young can escape to the cities and survive alone. Young Christian churches offer friendship, remarkable community, support and hope. But new Christians still find themselves torn between their new faith and the secular pressures of city and country life.
