At one time most Christians knew the name of George Muller and one fact at least about him: he lived ‘by faith’ and saw God provide for his orphanages and himself in an extraordinary way. He is less well-known nowadays, so Carol Purves has done well to write this enthralling account of Muller’s life.
He was born into an aristocratic family in Prussia in 1805, but from an early age was a thief and liar, going even further into a life of vice as he grew up, and he ended up in prison. Carol Purves’s account of his conversion brings home to our minds again, the amazing ways God has when drawing a soul to himself, and then later leading Muller to England and his work with orphans.
Refusing a salary from an impoverished congregation, Muller declared the principle he adopted for the rest of his life: ‘My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Jesus Christ.’ The author then recounts how God honoured that trust, and provided in exact detail and at the right times. There is much more to Muller’s life recorded in the book and some interesting photographs at the end.
Muller’s final message is in his diary: ‘My faith is the same faith which is found in every believer. Try it for yourself.’ I warmly commend this book to you.
