One of the side effects of growing a bit older is that either we become entrenched in our comfort zone, or we open up to novelties just to add some spice.
This small book is not ‘a novel’, but it has some novel and spicy angles on important aspects of the Christian experience and for that reason I was glad that EN sent it my way.
It is presented in the form of letters written between two old friends who both have the ability to see the wacky side of church life. At first glance it may appear light-hearted and even flippant, but don’t be fooled, this little baby packs a punch and not always according to the official rules of boxing.
Page after page exposes many of the more discreet sins that are often hard to identify, especially within well-ordered and respectable churches. In places it is genuinely witty, but this only adds to the impact when you are taken off guard, as, for example, some facet of modern day Phariseeism is laid bare. See, for example, Letter 19.
However, as well as this, there are some very tender and honest confessions, which warm the heart and amplify the grace of God, which should never cease to amaze us.
All in all, a good one to read when stranded in some airport wondering if the insurance will pay up.
