THE REST OF LIFE
Rest, play, eating, studying, sex from
a kingdom perspective
By Ben Witherington III
Eerdmans. 158 pages. £11.99
ISBN 978 0 802 867 377

Part of a series on kingdom perspective, this book discusses activities that take up much of our life but that perhaps we do not think through enough. Each chapter weighs what the Bible has to say on the topic and considers life now that God’s kingdom has come in Jesus, but is still yet to come.

Much of what we know as rest, play, feasting, fasting, studying and sex does not continue in the new heaven and the new earth. In part these are opportunities God has given for this life to be used in wise balance with each other and with those things which last for ever.

Stimulating

The book is a theologian reflecting bibli-cally and personally on some theologically neglected subjects. Chapters vary in how systematically they treat the topic and in how easy they are to read. I found parts of it quite stimulating. He demonstrates well the need for a kingdom perspective on the practicalities of life and how that can lead to a well-balanced life.

I think the book is one for church teachers to digest, perhaps to disagree with and to regurgitate some of its insights when they teach.
