An unusual but important book. Don’t dismiss it because the author has chosen to use the ‘historical novel’ approach to clothe his subject.
And, yes, the question of whether the last 12 verses of Mark’s Gospel are genuinely part of inspired Scripture may seem one best left to the academics. But the real subjects of this book are not dusty documents in libraries but living stones in God’s church. Cedric Longville is asking us, what makes our faith real? How can we be sure we today are genuine believers?
Celtic Christian
The book is longer than I expected for such a modest price but it is well worth giving time to follow the plot with its interwoven elements of adventure, travel, romance and Christian experience. The author’s Welsh background allows him to include a young Celtic Christian as a significant, while minor, heroine in his story. He shows a thorough and extensive knowledge of the Bible’s message and his textual quotes arise naturally and are both pertinent and gospel focussed.
Two Addenda provide an outline of the historical events which frame the story and also give a valuable insight into Cedric’s personal interest in his topic and what motivated his considerable research. I won’t spoil your reading by telling you what advice Emperor Constantine did eventually receive about Mark’s closing verses. The value of the book is not only in that but in the spiritual challenges of these fourth-century characters and the relevance of their faith for us today.
