Standing firm

2 PETER:
Faith in a Sceptical World
By David Burge
10Publishing. 36 pages. £3.99
ISBN 978 1 910 587 355

This is a book of 30 undated daily devotions going through 2 Peter. Each day tells you the passage to read and then gives a short page of explanation, application, challenge, followed by one or two questions for reflection.

The devotional material is warm and pastoral and very clear, not skirting around difficult issues in the text. David Burge brings out the message of standing firm by being established in gospel truth. 2 Peter is a short book to cover in 30 sections, so many of the days focus on only one or two verses. This gives Burge the space to sometimes bring out theological issues arising in the text. For example, one day explains how divine authorship of the Bible works, another explains the renewal of the heavens and earth, while another gives helpful safeguards for correct interpretation of difficult Bible texts. This mix of plain exposition and topical theology wouldn’t necessarily happen if you were preaching through larger chunks of 2 Peter.
