Many of you have heard the story of the man who announced that ‘tonight I’ll be explaining the Trinity’.
Later that afternoon he came across one older deacon dipping a spoon into a stream and emptying the contents on the ground. He enquired what the man was doing. The deacon replied, I am emptying the stream; the man laughed and said you’ll never empty a stream with a spoon: the old man replied, I will as soon empty this stream as you will explain the Trinity.
That may seem a strange way to begin reviewing a book that claims to explain the biblical teaching about the Trinity, but in many ways it’s the ongoing theme that runs through the book, such is the mystery of the Trinity. The finite cannot explain the infinite. We can however understand that it is true and solid biblical teaching, and that is what Stuart Olyott has done here.
The purpose of the book is to give the biblical evidence for the existence of one God in three persons that coexist in eternal unity and who are equally one in nature and divinity. The book is a masterpiece of doctrine simplified so that even the simplest of Christians can understand.
Don’t get me wrong, it is not simplistic, but it’s so well written that all who read it will gain from it. The book is a riveting read, a gem of information. It is useful for defending the faith against those who deny the Triune nature of God, or for simply getting a better understanding of the biblical truths involved. In short, it is a must for every Christian.
There is no doubt that this is a book of theology, but don’t let that put anyone off; where theological terms are used there is ample explanation, the book is systematic in its presentation, informative and accurate in its explanation. I thoroughly enjoyed and understood every page.
