Anything written by Alec Motyer is to be looked forward to and enjoyed.
This is certainly the case with this added contribution to the new series by 10 Publishing of 40 daily but undated devotions through Bible books. Each is no longer than other daily Bible reading notes with which many of us will be familiar. What makes these distinctive is, first, the author's knowledge and command of his subject and, second, the presentation of the material in a short book form of A5 size.
Four sections
The introduction first explains succinctly that the simplest way to look at the book of Exodus is in four sections (1.1-5.51; 5.22-12.51; 13.1-24.18) and then emphasises that the Book of Exodus is a visual aid providing teaching about law and grace. Truth is expressed with powerful simplicity. ‘God’s law in the Bible is not a ladder we try to climb to get into God’s good books; it is a way of life through his work of redemption. Grace always comes first; law follows, so that we who have been redeemed know how to live so as to delight in our Redeemer.’
Profitable
I can see two ways in which this book can be used with great profit. 1. It is first-rate for daily Bible reading, providing a refreshing alternative to conventional Bible reading notes. 2. With so many church fellowships having weekly or fortnightly fellowship groups, with Bible study an important constituent part, it provides a superb and, as far as I know, an unsurpassed introduction to the book of Exodus for such a context.
