This helpful book of 30 daily devotions expounding 1 Thessalonians, was originally a series given at the Keswick Convention by the much-loved Bible teacher and author, Alec Motyer. It is part of a series, jointly produced by IVP and Keswick Resources, entitled ‘Food for The Journey.’ The aim of this series is to make these biblically-rich and practically helpful messages accessible to a wider audience.
Each day there is a portion of Scripture to read with key verses identified. A short but theologically deep explanation of the passage is given and there are often questions for personal reflection or suggestions for prayer. I recommend it for Christians of all ages. It is very easy to read and yet spiritually searching. The series has also been specifically designed to be small enough to fit in a pocket or handbag and the introduction encourages the reader to take the books with them wherever they go.
Gripping
This month of undated personal study proved so gripping that it was often tempting to read several days’ worth in one sitting! However, there is an undoubted advantage to taking a slower, more considered approach, as the encouraging truths of 1Thessalonians are profound. They present challenges to our relationships within the church and to the depth of our understanding of forgiveness and assurance – to name but three themes which were masterfully explained.
The late Revd Alec Motyer handles the Word of God with pastoral warmth and an unshakeable confidence in its authority. His teachings on living in the light of the Second Coming are compelling.
