This is an excellent book that aims to make clear and connected the accounts of Christ’s last few days on earth as recorded in the four Gospels. In 23 engrossing chapters, the author expounds the narratives that describe Christ’s arrest, his trial, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. Each chapter is headed with the relevant references from the four Gospels, which are then expounded carefully in a clear and readable style.
Telling illustrations enliven the text and the author’s sanctified imagination illuminates the story here and there.
Difficulties resolved
Difficulties and apparent discrepancies are examined, and where possible unravelled and explained. The teaching is soundly orthodox and spiritually uplifting, and the author aims to make the gospel very clear. Any Christian could benefit from and enjoy the book, whether newly converted or an aged saint. In fact it would be an ideal gift for a new Christian. But the book’s usefulness is not limited to Christians, for throughout the pages the author explains and applies the gospel, so that this title is actually a powerful evangelistic tool as well as a warmly devotional work. The application is clear, direct and varied.
In the Preface, the author states that he aims to be expositional, to tackle difficulties, to be evangelistic, and to explain doctrines. He also aims to show that the Gospel records are real history, to give the background to the events of the Spring of AD 30 and apply those events to the readers’ life and situation, and in doing so to be clear, to bring to life details often overlooked, and bring glory to God. This reviewer believes that he succeeds admirably in these aims. The book has wide potential and could be used for personal devotional reading and study, in family worship, in a teenage or adult study group, in a one-to-one evangelistic study, or as a gift to an unsaved friend. Warmly recommended.
