HELP!
I’m confused about credit and debt
By Martin Sweet
Day One. 59 pages. £2.50
ISBN 978 1 846 255 267
This booklet addresses the topical issue of spending more than you have, resulting in so many being caught in the ‘credit trap’.
The author points out that this is a very relevant problem for our culture, but that the Bible has much to say about money and possessions. It is a useful booklet for everyone wanting to live well, following biblical truth.
Helpfully, Martin starts by reminding the reader that for those who trust in Jesus the greatest debt has been paid! He invites his readers to receive this free gift of salvation in Jesus.
Attitude and desires
The author continues by telling us that much of the problem with money is in our heads, meaning it is about our attitude and desires, our impatience and desire for immediate gratification. He goes on: ‘The simple answer is: Get our perspectives sorted out.’ This confronts our generation that so loves shopping, whether on the High Street or online.
The booklet considers what the Bible has to say about debt, and then who to borrow from in our day. Martin provides five clear rules about how to get the best deal possible if you need to borrow, with good explanations about such things as APR (annual percentage rate). He also gives four rules in using a credit card. There is a separate section dealing with student loans and top-up fees.
So the booklet reminds us to start with our hearts, to use our heads and to act sensibly. It is a useful resource for anyone leaving home and having to manage finances on their own, with biblical and practical advice; a good booklet for churches to keep in stock.
