THE CHRISTIAN MIND:
Escaping futility
By William Edgar
Banner of Truth. 118 pages. £5
ISBN 978 1 848 718 159

What are our minds? Is God interested in how we use them? In this helpful mini-guide, William Edgar gives readers a biblical theology of the mind.

From our creation in God’s image, through the Fall and our redemption in Christ, Edgar demonstrates the importance of an engaged Christian mind which recognises God’s authority over human reason.

Knowledge of God

In a culture where truth is relative and sought within ourselves, Edgar shows how God is both the source and subject of our knowledge. He explains that since knowledge comes from God, our task as his creatures is to hold reason it in its rightful place, under God’s authoritative word. Reason is a servant of God’s Word, not the master over it.

Edgar then explains that since our minds are God-given our first priority in using them should be to fill them with the knowledge and love of him. The driving principle of this book is that knowing God is the key to a mature Christian mind. If we know God rightly, we will comprehend ourselves and our world as he intends. This book helpfully demonstrates how a renewed Christian mind provides a framework or worldview that enables us to apply Scripture to all of life, even those modern subjects about which the Bible does not directly speak. Edgar clearly shows that the benefits of a Christian mind are not just theoretical but practical, impacting everything from our relationships to our devotional life. Considering this is an introductory book, at points it’s not the easiest of reads. But in a world which believes faith and reason to be enemies, this book equips Christians to recognise them as allies.
