‘Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.’

No, Colossians 3.13 does not spring to mind as your classic Christmas text. Nevertheless, in his latest seasonal offering, So this is Christmas, this is exactly where evangelist Rico Tice goes. Why?

Tice explains that Christmas is often a time when we reflect upon the fact that many of our relationships are full of grievances. Indeed, through the frequently employed ‘wall’ imagery, with all its modern geopolitical connotations, Tico paints the human problem. We are at war with God because of our sin. Consequently, we are at war with others too. Thus, he implores the reader to accept that Jesus really came in history, really wants to help and save us, and really makes forgiveness with God and other people possible.

Great way to end

As usual, this latest tract from Tice is convincing, biblical and pastorally insightful. Unusually, the tract does not just end with ‘How to become a Christian’ but also speaks of the Holy Spirit’s work of changing the believer. This section is helpful.

There are some excellent quotes from intellectual heavyweights, like John Stuart Mill, but also popular quotes from acclaimed pop stars. It is humorous in places, yet does not shirk from presenting the gospel compellingly.

The final ‘What Next?’ section, which speaks of reading a Gospel, praying for insight and finding a local church, is particularly well done. The book would make a superb stocking filler for anyone, but particularly an unbelieving friend or family member.
