Worshipping Our Children

IDOLS OF A MOTHER’S HEART
By
Christina Fox
Christian Focus. 191 pages. £7.99
ISBN 978 1 527 102 330

In this book Christina Fox tackles the issue that affects every mother as we look to be good parents to our children.

Christina recognises that each of us has the tendency to want success and happiness for our children. She demonstrates that we fail, however, to understand how these things can grow to become idols, thereby replacing our primary calling to put God and our service for Him first. She challenges readers to stop looking for life and purpose in our children and to recognise how parenting is used by God to bring about holiness in our own lives.

Replacing God in our lives?

The author shows us how we are created for worship of our creator and explores the concept of idolatry which can quickly take the place of God in our lives. She then identifies five idols and helps the reader to explore each one in turn, so that we ask ourselves whether any of these have subtly taken the place of God being first in our lives.

A healthier place

The author then helpfully provides two chapters encouraging the reader to move to a more positive approach whereby our relationships with the Lord and our children are restored to a healthier place.

The book is well produced by Christian Focus; it has questions at the end of each chapter and would be ideal for a small group of mothers to work through together.
