It is often said that parenting is ‘heart work’ – as well as hard work! Sarah Dargue starts this book by asking: ‘How is your heart?’ In this short, easy-to-read, book Dargue takes the reader through Colossians in order to strengthen and encourage them to keep their hearts focused on Jesus through this new season of life.

Chapters include: A healthy heart; A heart of awe; Threats to your heart; A cross-shaped heart; A community-focused heart; When to seek help for your heart. Each chapter has some questions to discuss with your spouse or a close friend.

This book is really focused on the heart of the parents, encouraging us to see where we can grow our hearts and faith and to encourage our children and others around us. She draws us to the cross as the ‘heartbeat’ of our faith. Even as sleeplessness, etc., exposes our sinful tendencies, she helps us to see God’s grace anew: ‘Our maturity as believers is wholly dependent on not moving away from the cross of Christ.’

Dargue is understanding of the pressures that new parents face, encouraging them to stay connected to God, His word and His church. She also gives helpful, practical examples of how this may work. I found I missed years of sermons (either through unsettled children or a haze of tiredness!) and often wondered what the point of me going to church was! Sarah affirms mums in this position and encourages them to ‘make the most of every opportunity’ to share the gospel with those around us, helping mums to see purpose in this new season.

Unlike some parenting books, I didn’t feel inadequate at the end. I wish I had read it eight or more years ago! Dargue is honest about her own struggles and never makes you feel like parenting should be perfect. She encourages you to keep going in Christ. The book ends with a chapter with information on where to go when things are tough, which I think is great. I would heartily recommend this to give to any of your friends or church members who are soon to be parents.
