In this short book, Tom Robson invites us ‘to pause and take in an early view of the glory [we]’re heading into in Christ’ (p.4).
The opening chapter begins inauspiciously, for, in a section entitled ‘Glory Defined’, no Bible texts feature. We have to take it on trust that ‘to be glorious is to have attributes or achievements that others enjoy celebrating’ (p.7).
But the rest of the book is demonstrably Scriptural, and we are led on a journey designed to enable our hearts to be stirred by the wonder of the gospel. The author encourages us to slow down and allow our breath to be taken away by God’s grace (Ch. 2), faithfulness (Ch.3) and victory in Christ (Ch.4). He successfully blends systematic theology and Biblical theology as he takes us to the heart of the Bible’s glorious God-centred, Christ-centred message. ‘Breathtakingly Glorious Gospel’ is a title that would reflect more readily the contents of the book.
Robson explains and illustrates the key gospel concepts in an engaging manner. The book is accessible to young believers – and could usefully be given to thoughtful unbelievers who are open to discovering the Bible’s message in a nutshell. Yet even experienced and well-taught believers can benefit from this gospel refresher and be led, in line with the exhortation of the closing (fifth) chapter, to deeper worship of the Lion who is the Lamb.
