Wow! I am constantly stunned by what the God of grace does!
Many (most?) of us have been blessed by Philip Yancey through his books, so it is fascinating to see how God used his background, moulded his personality and grew his faith. And being a Yancey book, it is eminently readable!
Philip’s father died when he was one year old, and he grew up under the thumb of his mother, a fervent ‘Southern’ fundamentalist. Their poverty meant they lived for many years in a trailer, with Philip’s life made a misery by his difficult disciplinarian mother. He learned to pretend to have faith, while his brother seemed genuinely spiritual but ended up totally against the church. Only when Philip was at college did he discover how his parents’ harsh faith led directly to his father’s death.
