LONGING

As we live in a time between the times – rejoicing in the victory of the cross, awaiting the resurrection to come – we need songs that celebrate what we already have and express our longing for heaven. Olly Knight’s Longing is a wonderful example of the latter.
The real strength of this song is its simple beauty; you can’t help but feel the aches for heaven woven between lyric and melody. Olly has (along with co-writers Tim Mann, Phil Moore and Josh Rayner) begun with the great and certain hopes of Scripture – seeing the glory of Christ, an end to grief and sadness, being made perfect in Christ. And they have married them skilfully with melody that I think captures the tension in which we now find ourselves: the holy awe of what we see dimly now and is still yet to come.
Attendees of Word Alive back in April can tell you how singable this song is for a congregation. Longing is one of the strongest songs on Olly’s Lockdown LP You Hold The World, where a number of the tracks express a return to a simple devotion to Christ and yearning for heaven as the storms of life swell.
Longing comes from a heart devoted to Jesus and a desire to help the church long for heaven. It will be a great addition to our playlists and our church songlists. Download the music for free at Olly’s website: worshipjesus.co.uk.
