STEP, ‘Scripture Tools for Every Person’, is designed to give users, particularly those in disadvantaged countries, free access to trustworthy Bible expertise.
Created by Bible scholars at Tyndale House, Cambridge, UK, it is curated by a non-denominational body of scholars and other volunteers who are passionate about sharing accurate information on the Bible.
This software is VERY good; and, as one user said: ‘I’m barely scratching the surface.’ The software itself is available in 50 languages and they have the Bible in over 280 languages.
Over the years I have used Accordance software and tried my hand at Logos. However, as it often is with the free version of apps and software, you end up reaching the limit of said free version. With STEP however, this will never happen. I would also go as far as to say that STEP is much easier to use than many of its counterparts.
At first glance, I could not see any commentaries on the software. This is something that other software includes for additional purchase or as part of a monthly subscription. However, much to my delight, after some digging, I found a list of available commentaries. It is by no means an extensive list (maybe 20 commentaries or so), and I’m unaware if the creators plan to add more. There are also ‘reports’ available that cover places in the Bible, miracles, names of God, and OT parallels. Reading plans such as one-year chronological or three-year lectionary are also there.
There is a slight lag when clicking on things (browser version), but not enough to annoy. Font size, colour, background is also changeable.
I am not permitted enough words to cover all that STEP offers! You must really try it for yourself, because if some more commentaries can be added and a couple of slight user-interface issues fixed, this could really challenge the big guns of Bible software.
