On November 16, 65 men from 15 different churches met at Borough Green Baptist Church, Kent, for the second ‘Men of God in Kent’ conference.
The overall theme was ‘Man-up, Take Responsibility’. John Cheeseman spoke twice, firstly on ‘Take Responsibility for Yourself’ — the need for spiritual discipline — then on ‘Take Responsibility for Others’ — the need for men to take spiritual leadership. He used the example of Joshua and his experiences before taking over the leadership of Israel from Moses.
Getting practical
John’s approach was practical and very much appreciated by the men. The conference ended with a time for questions and discussion when men could add their own comments on the subject.
It was organised by the Kent Evangelical Ministers’ Fellowship (KEMF) which has met on a Monday for many years at Waterford House Evangelical Free Church, Strood. Pastors and elders from churches across Kent gather late afternoon for a devotional message, prayer and discussion. Then in the evening a paper is brought on theological topics of practical or historical relevance.
In November, Paul Relf of Enon Baptist Church, Chatham, gave an excellent and thorough paper on ‘The Church in an Ageing Population’. He gave the biblical principles regarding our attitude to old age and how physical decline may or may not be attended by spiritual decline. Finally Paul brought us to reflect on how we may minister to the elderly folks around our churches and the challenge of the gospel to reach out to them.
