The 27th annual Scottish Reformed Conference took place on Saturday 14 May. The conference has been growing numerically since it was established.
Just short of 600 people, not including the large number of children, came to enjoy the activities and teaching.
The two speakers this year were Paul Washer from the US and Sandy Roger who was formerly the Principal of the Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh.
Great mischief
In his first address, Paul Washer preached from Romans 3.21-26 and pointed out that great mischief has been perpetrated against the gospel because of a general ignorance of the biblical doctrine of the attributes of God. This has led to carelessness about sin’s offence to God. In the whole scheme of salvation, he said, sin is not the problem, but the wrath of God is. Salvation is from God, by God and for God.
In his second address, Paul preached from 2 Corinthians 5.21-22 about the excellencies of Christ who knew no sin and therefore was able to become a curse for us.
Sandy Roger directed attention to the personal experience of the assurance of forgiveness of sin from 1 John 1 and 2. The enjoyment of assurance is set in the context of confession, which Sandy pointed out was the whole argument of the epistle. His three headings were 1) the centrality of sin’s confession, 2) the necessity of sin’s confession, in which sin is analysed and vocalised as in Psalm 51, and 3) the certainty of sin’s cancellation.
There was a real sense of the presence of God throughout the day and especially in our informal fellowship.
