Union School of Theology (UST) held its commission service at Bryntirion on 16 September.
The decision to hold this event on a Friday at the beginning of a new college year meant the meeting room was full of students. They were made up of campus students, both degree and from the International Foundation Course.
The Academic Dean, Dr Cor Bennema, introduced students from a range of courses and settings, united in their desire to know the Lord better and to make him known.
The fear of the Lord
UST President, Professor Mike Reeves, preached from Proverbs 1.7: ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.’ This fear is not that which repels the unbeliever but is to do with an elevated and awestruck view of God. His majesty and beauty attract the believer in humble adoration. When we see God as he is and the loveliness of the Saviour, we are stripped of pride and the desire for lesser things. Such an appreciation is a good starting place for student and teacher alike.
Future church leaders
Such a mentality is crucial for a future church leader – able to pursue a righteous but unpopular path without fearing men’s faces yet always with grace and kindness.
