The British Medical Association decided to back abortion on demand at their annual representative meeting in Bournemouth in June.
Speaking afterwards, Dr Peter Saunders of the Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF) commented: ‘This defies common sense and the BMA will dismay thousands of ordinary doctors and nurses with their unprecedented decision.
‘What the BMA has chosen to do is back abortion on demand without restriction including on length of gestation and sex. Anyone will be able to carry out an abortion anywhere by any means in any place at any gestation for any reason. Should Parliament legislate similarly, we would be only the third country in the world after China and Canada to remove all safeguards to unborn children.’
Women unhappy
He continued: ‘A survey last year undertaken by ComRes found that only 1% of women wanted to see the time limit for abortion extended above 24 weeks, while the same number wanted to see the time limit for abortion extended through to birth. The same poll found that 70% of women wanted to see the abortion time limit reduced to 20 weeks or below. Strikingly, the poll found that more than 91% of women favoured a total ban on sex-selective abortion.
