Charlie Gard’s parents had privately expressed concerns in July, after discovering that the lawyer representing their son in court heads a charity that backs assisted suicide.
Victoria Butler-Cole, who spoke on Charlie’s behalf in court, is chairman of Compassion in Dying, a sister organisation to Dignity in Dying which campaigns for assisted suicide to be made legal in the UK.
Charlie, who suffered from a rare genetic condition causing progressive brain damage and muscle weakness, died on 28 July in a hospice, following a court ruling.
His parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard had fought a legal battle to gain permission for their 11 month-old son to receive medical treatment in the US. The case was dropped four days before Charlie died, after an American neurologist who had offered to treat Charlie said it was too late for it to work.
