The new relationships and sex education subjects should be ‘LGBT-inclusive’, the Minister for Equalities said in a PinkNews article in August.
Nick Gibb also promised a wide-reaching consultation on the plans, which cover English schools. Ministers have denied parents the right to withdraw their children from the primary-level classes on Relationships Education, but the right is set to remain at the secondary-level.
Homosexual lobby group Stonewall said it will be pressing the government to ensure that LGBT issues are ‘reflected in updated guidance for schools’.
Stating that young people need to be ‘equipped for life in Britain as it is today’, Gibb added: ‘We will be consulting widely about the curriculum to ensure it is the best it can be, is age appropriate, and commands the support of the teaching profession.’
A YouGov survey in July showed that more than four in ten British adults believe primary-aged kids should not be taught about homosexual relationships.
