In February, The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) will poll its 35,000 members on assisted suicide.
It will ask if members think assisted suicide should become legal in the UK, and if doctors would be prepared to ‘participate actively’ in assisted suicide if the law was changed.
Change of position
The RCP said it would adopt a neutral position on assisted suicide until two-thirds of respondents support or oppose a law change. This represents a change in their position without a majority voting for the change. Further, they are ‘insisting that this position change will only be reversed if two thirds of members reject the change’ said a spokesman for CARE.
