The Titus Trust ‘welcomes the Church of England’s review’ into the case against the late John Smyth, it was announced in August.
In its statement it said the Trust had already ‘shared a significant amount of information with the Church’s national safeguarding team’, indicating that it is being ‘transparent and supportive’, but remains ‘restricted by on-going legal action’. It aims to be more involved once ‘legal proceedings relate(d) to the case’ are closed.
The abuse of children in the 1970s from Iwerne camps involved coercion and beatings as the boys got older by camp chairman, John Smyth. The abuse was known about by the camp’s board in 1982. There were several recipients of the original report on Smyth in the early 1980s when the abuse came to light. It wasn’t until 2017 that the report was made available to secular authorities when Hampshire Police issued a warrant.
