A report in the Highland Times at the end of January drew en’s attention to the content of the Scottish curriculum for sex education, which is explicit and teaches pornography in a positive way.
For children aged ten+, a cartoon about pornography includes an audible reference to watching bestiality. Whilst teaching about the objectification of women, the cartoons objectify women. Anal sex is normalised even though it carries a higher risk of STIs and causes physical damage.
In the senior classes, children are taught about the existence of porn categories, many of which are unprintable. The human presenter of the six-minute film nods knowingly to camera admitting he watches porn. For one video clip shown to a class of ten-year olds, YouTube asks for age verification.
Evidence on the addictive nature of porn and how it ‘rewires’ the brain is taught in another session. However, as porn has already been promoted in the classroom, this message will be lost. Masturbation is normalised for younger children with ‘rules’ about when to do it discussed in class. The addictive nature of it and the link to porn is not taught.
In a film about virginity, the child who chooses not to have sex for either religious reasons or because ‘they are not ready’ is insultingly depicted as a spotty, spectacle-wearing girl. The characters who have sex are attractive to the audience.
When asked about the curriculum, the SNP’s John Swinney said ‘some sensitive material was covered’ after he was told the curriculum taught porn genres, and how to perform intimate homosexual acts.
