A Christian woman with Down’s syndrome has been given permission to challenge the current law on abortion at the High Court.
Heidi Crowter and fellow campaigner Máire Lea-Wilson say the law discriminates against unborn babies with the condition.
In the UK, abortion is permitted up to 24 weeks for most reasons, but is available up to birth for children deemed to have a ‘severely life-limiting condition’ – including Down’s syndrome.
Costs for the case are around £100,000, and the online fundraiser has reached 65% of the target.
en spoke to Heidi who got married* in July to James Carter, who also has Down’s syndrome.
‘To anyone who says they couldn’t cope with bringing up a baby who has special needs, I’d say there is lots of help on offer. Everyone needs to see the person behind the extra chromosome. Recently someone said to me ‘your husband is Down’s syndrome too’. He has Down’s syndrome, he is not Down’s syndrome. Put the person before the disability.’
Heidi has been shortlisted for the National Diversity Awards to take place in February.
