A pioneering Scottish church planting initiative is hoping to establish three new congregations.
Ben Hansen of 20Schemes writes: ‘Almost one third of Glasgow’s population resides within the top 10% of Scotland’s most deprived areas.
‘That’s a staggering number. Not only are Glasgow’s schemes (housing estates) some of the most deprived in Scotland, the city is also home to over 100 schemes. And, as is true in schemes across Scotland, very few gospel-preaching churches exist in these communities.
‘We at 20schemes want to see that changed. People are perishing without the good news of Jesus, and we believe the best way to address that problem is to establish healthy local churches. We currently have two active works in Glasgow – an established church in Barlanark and an ongoing church revitalisation in Maryhill. As we look ahead to 2021 and beyond, we hope to home in on Glasgow, providing a focused effort to plant/revitalise several churches in Glasgow’s poorest communities.
‘It will be no small task. There are reasons these places are largely unreached – they are tough places to live and do ministry. But the work is already underway.
‘We’re thankful that God has seen fit to raise up multiple families to move to Glasgow. Some will be joining us as 20schemes church planters, gospel workers, and/or interns. Some are coming to us from the States, while others will move internally within Scotland.
‘We plan to recruit, train and support three new church planting/revitalisation teams in Glasgow this year. Would you join us in praying for these efforts? The ongoing Covid lockdown will only further complicate these ambitions, but we trust God’s good enduring providence.
‘We’re thankful that Bible studies continue in both Maryhill and Barlanark, albeit on Zoom. Nonetheless, people are hearing about Jesus as they engage with God’s word.
‘Glasgow’s schemes may be dark, needy places. But they are not beyond the reach of the Lord. His arm is strong to save. His church will be built. We covet your prayers as we endeavour to see healthy churches established in Glasgow’s schemes this year.’
