Around 45 people have gathered for a Protestant Truth Society (PTS) Day Conference titled ‘Covid and the Churches: a Biblical Response’ at St Mary’s Church, Castle Street, Reading. Priscilla Seidler writes:
Bishop Dominic Stockford, PTS chairman and pastor of Christ Church, Teddington, (who was consecrated as bishop for the Evangelical Connexion of the Free Church of England in 2008) spoke first, on ‘David and Goliath: an exposition of God’s wondrous provision’, which encouraged us to expect and look for God’s provision, knowing that our Lord God always provides more than enough for our needs – hugely encouraging and spot on for our times.
He was followed by Kevin McGrane of PTS, who gave us the facts about the current situation (as opposed to certain narratives being promulgated), clearly set out, with thoughts about the future, all very helpful.
Michael Phillips of Christian Concern spoke on the legal situation regarding congregations and worship, talking about their work with street preachers and those handing out leaflets, as well as with churches who sought to stay open during lockdowns – the theological justification being that the church (not the state) has exclusive authority over church matters. It is hoped that the success of the Scottish Judicial Review will be binding across the UK in the case of another lockdown.
After a break for lunch, Regan King, pastor of The Angel Church (Grace Baptist), Islington, talked on ‘Pastoring on the front line in a hostile climate’. He used Psalm 37 to encourage us not to fall into fear, since the enemies of the Lord, although seemingly strong, are essentially powerless, and to show us where our commitment must be – i.e. to delight and be established in the Lord. He pointed out that pastoring in such an environment calls for Bible-based principles, the Holy Spirit’s power, a humble spirit and prayerful preparation. He reminded us that we have a commission to deal with the sin sickness of the world, which is far worse than Covid.
