UK in transition: By divine appointment

The headmaster at Prince George’s new school, Lambrook preparatory school in Ascot, has been described as a committed Christian.

Jonathan Perry is head of the 52-acre private school, which describes itself as having ‘a strong Christian and family ethos’ and is ten minutes’ drive from the home of the new Prince and Princess of Wales. Mr Perry is the son of retired evangelical bishop John Perry.

Poignantly, George and his two siblings, Charlotte and Louis, started as day pupils at the co-ed school – a Christian school – on the morning of Thursday 8 September. Their grandmother, the Queen, died later the same day. Lambrook was founded in 1860. Alumni include two of Queen Victoria’s grandsons.

Little is known about the extent to which Prince William, the new Prince of Wales, may or may not have any Christian faith. During the pandemic, he said: ‘The Christian teachings of faith, hope and love could not be more appropriate as we all try to navigate our way through these uncertain times.’ He is also reported to have had Christian input from some evangelical staff while he was at Eton, and while stationed in Anglesey, where he was undergoing training to fly the Sea King search and rescue helicopter with the RAF, it was suggested that one of his commanding officers was a believer.
