UK in transition: ‘What we’re praying for the new King and PM’

How three Christians responded to the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the appointment of Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Mike Royal, the evangelical General Secretary of Churches Together in England (see en, December 2021):

‘I’m looking for King Charles III to recognise that countries like Jamaica who have had Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, may now want to become republics, while remaining in the Commonwealth. Praying God gives wisdom on all sides to navigate this without fuss or rancour. Praying also that His Majesty will be instrumental in bringing the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex together. Praying this coming together will bring healing in communities and bring the country together. Praying King Charles III’s Christian faith and role with the Church will guide him in the way he reigns as king.’

Barry King, General Secretary, Grace Baptist Partnership:

‘For our recently deceased Queen privately, publicly, and repeatedly professed saving faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We can have genuine reason to believe our prayers – God save the Queen – were heard and answered. We must likewise pray that King Charles III will be saved and brought to a knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus.

‘The new Prime Minister and her Cabinet will benefit from prayers for wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discernment, discretion, and sound judgement. May we be granted peaceful and quiet lives, and be enabled to live in a godly and dignified way in answer to our prayers for our leaders.’

‘I am deeply saddened by the passing of our Queen who was regularly in my prayers. As we look forward, I will be praying for King Charles III, in particular that he will trust in Almighty God for his guidance and strength. Similarly, I am praying for our new Prime Minister that she will lead her Cabinet with the country’s best interests at heart. My prayers are focused around those who are experiencing hardship in the light of the cost of living crisis. May the government be most mindful of this and may the PM lead with compassion for our poorest families.’
