The Baptist Union of Great Britain’s (BUGB) ‘conversation and consultation’ about whether accredited Baptist Ministers can be in a same-sex marriage was just finishing as Evangelicals Now was going to press.

The next stage is for the research team set up to examine the issue to analyse the responses and present its findings to BUGB Council members for March.

But a group of evangelical Baptists has stolen a march on the official denominational process. Meeting in Croydon recently, over 250 attendees agreed two key draft resolutions. The first affirms that marriage is between one biological man and one biological woman and requires that all representatives and ministers – including the leaders in the BUGB, Associations, Colleges and Churches – affirm this position in their public ministries. The gathering thought it was important to have accountability and sanctions as part of any such resolution.
