A Christian beacon of hope for rough sleepers and homeless people which helps more than 10,000 people a year has a fresh lease of life after renovation work.
Webber Street, London City Mission’s (LCM) Day Centre has been at the forefront of offering practical care and compassion with gospel hope for more than 60 years.
Tragically, it is now estimated that 1 in 50 people in London experience homelessness, and the need for shelter and services for rough sleepers is growing.
Thanks to renovations at LCM’s Webber Street, which reopened its doors earlier this year, the Day Centre has been able to provide those sleeping rough with new hot showers, private consultation rooms (for help with administrative tasks, such as writing CVs, etc.), and a new dining room with space for more guests to enjoy a hot meal.
Last year alone, Webber Street Day Centre accommodated 10,450 guests, providing them with meals and showers. With the new renovations, the hope is to be able to reach even more of London’s rough sleepers, not only with practical support to take steps out of homelessness, but also gospel hope, offering new and refreshed spaces and more room to reach those most in need on London’s streets.
LCM missionary Jennifer Garibay, one of the key workers at Webber Street, comments: “What we want to do is not only to be able to give guests a place to take a shower, give them fresh clothing and a hot meal, but also give them a place they can feel safe.”
Webber Street guest Brian said: “I like to come to Webber Street. Otherwise, I’d be by myself, just dying of a broken heart. This place keeps my spirits up; you get your hot meals, you get your showers, and I’ve got my confidence back.”
