Around 12.5 million people in the UK have been helped by a church or a Christian organisation, while almost two thirds of adults believe churches will play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable people over the next year, a new study has found.
New research undertaken by Christians Against Poverty (CAP) suggests that the church has never played a more vital role in supporting those in need as the cost-of-living crisis continues to hit hard.
Their study of local churches and poverty, which surveyed 2,000 adults, found that 23% of UK adults reported that they or a loved one had been helped by a church or Christian body in the last five years, while 65% think such organisations will be crucial going forward.
Over 50% of those surveyed in London reported that they or a loved one had been supported by a Christian organisation, followed by Yorkshire on 29% and Scotland on 23%.
In response to the challenges to churches posed by increased need, CAP recently launched an appeal to raise £300,000 to support churches as they continue to support the most vulnerable people in their communities.
