Christian drug education charity Hope UK gave thanks to God for 170 years of service since its beginnings as the UK Band of Hope Union in 1855.
The thanksgiving service took place at the end of October in London and brought together current staff and voluntary drug educators, former staff members, volunteers, friends, and older members of the Band of Hope itself.

Celebrations included a display from the archives, with memorabilia from the Band of Hope in its heyday, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Former members of the Band of Hope local groups spoke about their formative experiences with the organisation, on video, and those present at the event enjoyed swapping stories and sharing memories together.
Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Brighton, reflected on the organisation’s history and on the work of Hope UK today – to equip children and young people with the knowledge and skills to lead drug-free lives.
“We recognise that we stand on the shoulders of giants – all those faithful people who worked so hard to make a difference in young people’s lives," she said. "Because of their efforts we are still here today; although times have changed, the need for high-quality alcohol and drug education is as pressing as ever.”
The celebration service was one of several events held to commemorate the 170th anniversary. A history evening together with the launch of a new book on the history of the Band of Hope is planned for the new year at Hope UK’s headquarters in Kettering, Northamptonshire.
