Members of Parliament have voiced deep concern over the increasing persecution of Christians worldwide, urging the UK government to take decisive action to address this trend.
The debate was led by Ruth Jones, MP for Newport West and Islwyn, who highlighted the severity of the situation:
"Despite being the world’s largest religion, Christianity is the most persecuted minority faith in many regions. That persecution stems from a range of sources, including Islamist extremism, Marxist regimes, and dictatorial governments."
Jones emphasised the importance of advocating for those facing oppression:
"It is imperative that we advocate on their behalf, ensuring that they receive the fundamental freedoms that so many of us in democratic societies take for granted."
During the debate, Andrew Rosindell, MP for Romford, underscored the UK's role in addressing this issue:
"We are here today to discuss a deep moral urgency. This is not an abstract issue; it is about the very real suffering of people — men, women and children — who are targeted, attacked, imprisoned and even murdered simply for their faith."
The debate also referenced findings from Open Doors, whose reports indicate alarming levels of discrimination and violence against Christian communities.
Henrietta Blyth, CEO of Open Doors UK and Ireland, said the parliamentary discussion was a welcome intervention:
"We were heartened to hear so many parliamentarians speak up for the plight of persecuted Christians. The voices raised reflect the grim reality faced by millions of Christians worldwide. It is imperative that the UK government translates these concerns into concrete policies that promote and protect religious freedom internationally."
