An emergency appeal by Christian international children’s charity Global Care to help Syrian refugees living in dire conditions in Lebanon, has raised almost £50,000, it was reported in September.
Global Care’s partners in Lebanon are using the money to provide monthly food parcels for families living in tents and makeshift shelters by the roadside in North Lebanon, after fleeing the vicious fighting in Syria. Most of the families have nothing but the clothes on their backs, and all have suffered terrible losses. The food parcels are literally helping them survive.
Global Care’s original commitment to feed 60 families each month from April to December was quickly met and exceeded, with funds raised currently standing at just over £45,000. But with no end in view and the crisis deepening, our partners want to increase this to feed many more families over the winter months up until March. Charity bosses have committed to at least double the funds available and have set a new target of £90,000 by the end of this year.
3000 arriving each day
When Global Care launched its appeal in March 2013, there were 300,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Today there are more than 720,000 registered Syrian refugees in the country (UNHCR), with thousands more unregistered — and a further estimated 3,000 arriving every day. Lebanon is a tiny country, with a population of just 4.5 million, and the situation is rapidly becoming intolerably difficult.
Food packs
Global Care is working in partnership with Christian Lebanese agency Heart For Lebanon (H4L) to supply and monitor the delivery of food packs, to needy families of any faith background. A food parcel feeding a family of four for a month costs £50.
