Up to 90,000 pro-lifers took to the streets of Dublin in March to urge the country to vote ‘no’ in the 25 May referendum on abortion.
The Constitution of Ireland’s Eighth Amendment pledges to ‘defend and vindicate’ the equal right to life of the unborn and the mother, ‘as far as practicable’. The referendum is being held to decide whether or not to repeal the amendment.
The Irish Supreme Court ruled that unborn children do not have constitutional rights outside of the Eighth Amendment, which protects their right to life. This means that an unborn child will no longer have the right to be born, as the ruling declares this right only begins after birth.
