It was widely reported in the early Autumn that Kanye West, the American rapper and music producer had become a Christian.
His wife, celebrity Kim Kardashian, said he ‘has had an amazing evolution of being born again and being saved by Christ’. West has subsequently been criticised for calling his latest album Jesus is King.
At his ‘Sunday Service’ music event held at Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral, New York, the gospel was clearly preached, although some present reported that no Bible was opened. West has ‘adopted’ a Los Angeles pastor called Adam Tyson to speak to his entourage and occasionally at the Sunday events. Tyson has spoken warmly of West’s new faith. One writer noted that he does appear to have ‘deified himself’ with religious proceedings, fostering a cult of personality.
It would be wonderful to see someone with such a profile embrace Christ, as long as the gospel he embraces is the one that sees West prepared to sacrifice himself and his own ambitions and take up his cross and follow Jesus Christ. Time will no doubt help clarify the depth and nature of West’s faith to himself and the watching world.
