UK groups supporting Christians in Pakistan have welcomed the election of Anthony Naveed as the first Christian Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Provincial Assembly, in the south of Pakistan. Naveed is the only Christian selected for a reserved seat for minorities in the Assembly by the progressive Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) following the recent general election.
Juliet Chaudhury of the British Asian Christian Association said: ‘Naveed’s election, representing Sind’s Christian minority of approximately 400,000 people, is a significant achievement amidst stiff competition from the influential Hindu minority. It positions him as the third most powerful decision-maker in the province.
‘While higher-ranking Christians typically originate from Punjab, where 75% of the Christian population lives, Anthony’s election was party-driven, and his parliamentary seat was reserved for minorities, obliging him to adhere to the party line or risk dismissal. This potential constraint may impede his advocacy for persecuted Christians. Nonetheless, his alignment with the liberal PPP offers hope. We fervently pray for God to shape his actions during his tenure.’
Nasir Saeed of the Centre for Legal Aid, Assistance and Settlement commented: ‘This is a historic moment as it is the first time a Christian MPA has been elected to this job. It sends a positive message of religious tolerance. Furthermore, it not only enhances the image of the PPP within the country but also internationally, portraying it as a progressive political party that respects and promotes minority rights.’
