Christian author and broadcaster Krish Kandiah is condemning those US Christian leaders who have compared Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate with Donald Trump’s recent criminal convictions.
Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Kandiah said: ‘To compare Trump to Jesus is a disgrace,’ and: ‘To make any kind of justification for Trump’s actions by comparing him to Jesus is a serious, indeed a blasphemous, suggestion’.
Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, in an attempt illegally to influence the 2016 Presidential election by paying off adult film star Stormy Daniels, with whom he had an adulterous relationship.
But a number of senior US church leaders have cast doubt on the fairness of the judicial process. Author and commentator Eric Metaxas said: ‘Many “Christians” are more offended by the f-word than by the satanic travesty of justice that was Trump’s “trial”. They are like the pious religious leaders whom Jesus denounced – and who murdered Him’. Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son said: ‘What we saw [at Trump’s trial] has never happened before. It raises questions about whether our legal system can be trusted.’
Speaking in mid-June, Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (pictured) also made the comparison between Trump and Christ, declaring: ‘The Democrats and the fake news media want to constantly talk about “President Trump is a convicted felon”... Well, you want to know something? The man that I worship is also a convicted felon.’ But one user of social media on X responded: ‘Did Jesus pay off a porn star and cover it up?’
